EDC Practice Management 12th Year Anniversary
As we celebrate and give thanks to God, all of our Providers and Employees for making EDC Practice Management a successful thriving company for the last 12 years.  We would like to pause for a moment to remember those who lost their lives on this day as well.  EDC Practice Management will always share this day with that tragic memory, but like our nation we shall grow stronger with God’s will and  grace to serve and offer the best we can to those we provide our services too.

EDC PRACTICE MANAGEMENT
“WHERE EVERY DOCTOR COUNTS”

SPRING FORWARD
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN FRIST THOUGHT OF DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME WHILE VISITING PARIS.  “AN ECONOMICAL PROJECT FOR DIMINISHING THE COST OF LIGHT” WAS THE ARTICLE HE PUBLISHED TO INVOKE DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIIME TO SAVE THE USE OF THE CANDLE BY GETTING UP EARLIER IN THE MORNING AND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE SUNLIGHT.  THIS WAS IN 1784.   HOWEVER, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN IS NOT THE FATHER OF DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME.
WILLIAM WILLETT WAS THE INVENTOR OF DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME.  IN 1905 WILLIAM WILLETT SUGGESTED MOVING THE CLOCKS UP IN THE SPRING BY 20 MINUTES EVERY SUNDAY IN APRIL., AND THEN MOVING THEM BACK BY 20 EVERY SUNDAY IN SEPTEMBER.  THE PURPOSE OF MOVING THE CLOCK FORWARD WAS TO HAVE DAYLIGHT IN THE MORNING AS WLL AND LIGHTER EVENINGS.
THIS DAYLIGHT SAVINGS SPARKED ROBERT PEARCE TO INTRODUCE IT TO THE HOUSE OF COMMON S.  FEBURARY 1908 THE BILL WAS DRAFTED.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME WAS ALSO USED IN THE GERMANY DURING WORLD WAR I IN ORDER TO SAVE FUEL.   THIS WAS ADOPTED AT 11:00 PM ON APRIL 30TH 1916.  THE USA AND MANY OTHER COUNTRIES FROM BOTH SIDES FOLLOWED.  POST WORLD WAR I MANY WENT BACK TO THE STANDARD TIME.  PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D ROOSEVELT CALLED DAY LIGHT SAVING TIME “ WAR TIME”  IN SEPTEMBER OF 1945 DAY LIGHT SAVINGS TIME  WAS FORCED 40 DAYS AFTER JAPAN BOMBED PEARL HARBOR.  THE TIMES ZONES THEN WERE CALLED “EASTERN WARTIME,” “CENTRAL WAR TIME,” AND PACIFICE WAR TIME.”  IN AUGUST OF 1945, THE TIME ZONES WERE THEN CALL “PEACE TIME.”
BETWEEN 1945 AND 1966  THERE WAS MUCH CONFUSION OF BROADCASTING TIME AS WELL AS BUS AND TRAIN ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES AS THEY WERE FREE TO CHOOSE WHICH TIME ZONE THEY WOULD HONOR.   AT THIS TIME THE CONGRESS “UNIFORM TIME ACT OF 1966”  THIS GAVE US A SPECFIC DATE AND TIME TO SPRING FORWARD OR FALL BACK.  IT BEGAN THE LAST SUNDAY IN APRIL AND ENDED ON THE LAST SUNDAY OF OCTOBER. EACH STATE STILL HAS THE CHOICE TO BE EXEMPT FROM DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BY PASSING AN LOCAL ORDINANCE.  DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME WAS ALSO USED TO HELP IN THE ENERGY CRISIS FOLLOWING THE EMBARGO OF OIL IN 1973.  DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME IS SAID TO HAVE SAVED AND THE ENERGY EQUAL OF 10,000 BARREL OF OIL EACH DAY.
SEVERAL COUNTRIES NOW USE DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME AND AFFECTS OVER A BILLION PEOPLE EACH YEAR.   THE DATES TO SPRING FORWARD OR TO FALL BACK ARE DIFFERENT IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD.   THE “ENGERY POLICY ACT OF 2005” EXTENDED OUR DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BY ABOUT ONE MONTH.  DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME NOW STARTS ON THE SECOND SUNDAY OF MARCH AND ENDS ON THE FIRST SUNDAY IN NOVEMBER.  THE ONLY STATES THAT DO NOT USE DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ARE HAWAII, MOST OF ARIZONA, INCLUDES PARTS OF PUERTO RICO, US VIRGINS ISLANDS, AMERICAN SAMOA, AND GUAM.

DON’T FORGET TO SPRING FORWARD THIS COMING SUNDAY MARCH 10, 2013.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SPRING FORWARD WITH YOUR MEDICAL BILLING GIVES A CALL.  WE CAN TAKE YOUR BILLING THAT HAS FALLEN BACK AND SPRING IT FORWARD SO YOU CAN RECEIVE WHAT IS DUE YOU.

The "Curse of Tippecanoe"
The curse began with William Harrison (Tippecanoe and Tyler Too) who died in 1841. He was elected in 1840. For a 120 years, every president elected in a year ending is zero died while serving in office. A zero is in an election every 20 years. The story is told that Tecumseh's older brother known as the Prophet set a curse on Harrison and future occupants of the White House in years that end with the same number as Harrison's election. He did this because of the treaty me of the Native Americans after a war. The curse was broken by Reagan (1980). He was shot but not killed. In 2000, George Bush was elected. There was an attempt against his life but he was not injured.

What the bible have been opened to during the swearing in of the president.

Hayes:  Ps 118: 11-13  - 11  They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.
12  They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.
13  Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall: but the LORD helped me.

Garfield: Proverbs 21:1  1  The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD,  as the rivers of water:
he turneth it whithersoever he will.

Cleveland: Psalms 112: 4-10  4  Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness:  he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
5  A good man showeth favor, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.
6  Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
7  He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.
8  His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.
9  He hath dispersed,he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honor
10  The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.

McKinnely: II Chronicles 1:10 1  And Solomon the son of David was strengthened in his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him, and magnified him exceedingly.
2  ¶ Then Solomon spake unto all Israel, to the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and to the judges, and to every governor in all Israel, the chief of the fathers.
3  So Solomon, and all the congregation with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon; for there was the tabernacle of the congregation of God, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.
4  But the ark of God had David brought up from Kir'jath–je'arim to the place which David had prepared for it: for he had pitched a tent for it at Jerusalem.  5 Moreover the brazen altar, Ex. 38.1-7 that Bez'aleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, he put before the tabernacle of the LORD: and Solomon and the congregation sought unto it.
6  And Solomon went up thither to the brazen altar before the LORD, which was at the tabernacle of the congregation, and offered a thousand burnt offerings upon it.
7  ¶ In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.
8  And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast showed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead.
9  Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. 10  Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?

Taft:  1 King 3 : 9-11   9  ¶ So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.
10  And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!
11  But Jehosh'aphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may inquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Here is Eli'sha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Eli'jah.

Wilson: Psalms 119: 43-46 43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments.
44  So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever.
45  And I will walk at liberty for I seek thy precepts.
46  I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings,  and will not be ashamed.

Harding:  Micah 6:8   He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
F.D. Roosevelt: 1 Corinthians 13  1  Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2  And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains,  and have not charity, I am nothing.
3  And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
 4  ¶ Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
 6  rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7  beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8  ¶ Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9  For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10  But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11  When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12  For now we see through a glass, darkly, but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
13  And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Truman: 1st term -Mathew 5  The Beatitudes  1 And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.
2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn   For they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Truman 2nd term:  The Ten Commandments 20 And God spoke all these words, saying:
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
13 “You shall not murder.
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
15 “You shall not steal.
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
Nixon : Isaiah 2:4  He shall judge between the nations,And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore.
George H. W. Bush :  The Beatitudes  And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. 2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:

EDC PRACTICE MANAGEMENT
“Where Every Doctor Counts”

Gotta have HEART

February is Heart awareness month.  Our blog today we are focused on the heart. The heart can be a silent killer.  Before you know it it’s too late.  That is why you must be on your toes concerning your heart.  We must be diligent in keeping ourselves healthy for hearts sake. This means eating properly, exercising, watching our alcohol intake and no smoking.  These are all things we should do in order to keep a healthy heart.  This is something we must make a habit of if we want a healthy, full and long life. We recommend having a yearly check up with your physician. A heart attack is not a respecter of person. It strikes the young, and the old, male or female and does not discriminate race color or creed.  Listed below are a few sign/symptoms related to heart attack

1. Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest.  It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.
2. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
3. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
4. Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
5. As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.

If you have any of these signs, don’t wait more than five minutes before calling for help. Call 9-1-1 and get to a hospital right away.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN 80/20?
When you call for an insurance verification, do you know what they mean by 80% of the allowable charges?  Some times this can be confusing to you as well as the patient.  In this week’s   blog I hope I can help explain what the insurance company means by 80% of the allowable charges.
The insurance will only pay the provider the maximum amount allowable according to your contract with the insurance company. This amount is considered full payment from the insurance.  Insurance companies have a fee schedule they refer to for payment of fees you charge.  This fee schedule is negotiated at the time the provider’s contract. It is comprised of the charges of all the providers of a certain area.
Now that we have figured out how they set up the allowable charges. Let’s take a look on how to figure the 80%.  When insurance pays 80/20 this means they will pay 80% of the allowable charges and the patients responsibility is the 20% of the allowable charges.  The balance between the allowable charge and the providers charge is usually written off by the provider according provider /insurance contract.  When the provider charges $100.00 for a service rendered, the insurance by only allow $90.00 the provider must then write off the $10.00. The insurance company will then pay 80% of the $90.00.  Some contracts state you may not bill for the balance of the fee after the insurance has paid.  Some contracts you may bill the patient the other 20%.

COLLECT THE”OUT OF POCKET” FROM YOUR PATIENT.

Most medical insurance has an out of pocket (OOP) expense.
The out of pocket expense amount is set by the insurance company according to the patient’s policy.  The set amount must be collected by the provider at the time of each visit until said amount is reached.  The patients insurance will only pay a certain percentage as established in plan until all OOP amount is reached.  So say you have a patient come into your office.  You call the insurance company and they tell you the patient has an 80/20 plan.  This means the insurance will only pay 80% of allowed amount. The patient has a $2500.00 OOP.  Until that $2500.00 is met the insurance will only pay 80% of the allowed amount, if all OOP has been met the insurance should pick up 100% of the allowed amount.  Patient may have an individual OOP or a family OOP.  This again depends on the insured’s policy. Some insurance allows the amount the patient pays on co-pay and deductible to be used towards their OOP expense.  Some do not allow accept the deductible and co pays as part of the OOP.  These are question that are asked of the insurance representative when you verify the patients insurance, at this the representative should be able to tell you the patients OOP and how much patient has paid toward this amount.
Is your practice collecting the deductibles, co pays and out of pocket fees, or are you leaving this money on the table?  Do you understand all the ins and outs of the patient insurance plans?
If you don’t understand you could be losing money every day on each patient.  Contact us we can help you know so you lose the money due you.  We also offer a billing contract that includes insurance verifications when you need them. We customize you a verification form suited for your practice.

Remember the deductibles!!!

Since the New Year is upon us don’t forget to collect your deductibles and copays. As you may or may not know most insurance companies work on a calendar year, however some use a fiscal year i.e. July to July. You may find out this information during the insurance verification. When  insurance company starts a new year the patient’s deductible amount start over.
What is a deductible?
A deductible is a sum of money paid by the insured before any benefits are paid by the insurance company according to patients’ policy.  Deductible are a standard practice with most all insurance companies.

What is the difference between copay and deductible?
The deductible is the patient responsibility owed to the provider. After the insured has paid the deductible the insured then pays a copay at each visit.  Copay is a set amount from the insurance company the patient pays  to the provider.  Say the deductible is $500.00 and the copay is $50.00, after patient meets the $500.00 deductible then the insured pays the $50.00 copay and the insurance should pay the remaining amount according to the policy of the insured.

Remember, collect the deductible if you want to be paid by the insurance and collect the copays too.  The money is owed you at the time services are rendered.  Also, when calling for an insurance verification remember to ask if the deductible has been met and if not how much is owed.

If you do not like calling for verifications EDC Practice Management will do the work for you.  Ask us how you can sign up for this service as well as have all your billing and management needs met.   Go to www.edcpracticemanagement.com and sign in so we may contact you and make your life easier.
